Alan Dickson Photography

I had seen Alan's work before and I knew that he was the one I wanted...

...it felt like he was a part of the family!

Alan and Heather Dickson are a husband and wife team who are the heart and soul of ALAN DICKSON Photography. Based in Thunder Bay, Ontario, Canada, Alan has been shooting since 1980, when he bought his first Nikon camera and photographed a friend’s wedding. The results were so fantastic that he has been shooting weddings ever since, and weddings are still his passion and focus. Heather came along in 1989, bringing a fresh sense of style and "woman's intuition" to the business, and as their family grew, so did the other aspects of the business.

Family, baby and children’s photography is now a large part of the business, and few studios can make a child feel as happy and comfortable as Alan and Heather's can, simply because of the relationships they have with their own children. "Play" is a very big part of family life, and while formal portraiture is important to mark key occasions, ALAN DICKSON Photography excels at bringing out the fun in any family, regardless of age.

Their commercial work has been featured on the covers of Canadian Lawyer and Resource World magazines, and in Reader's Digest and Westjet's Up magazine. Alan has photographed national campaigns for Kleenex, TCAN Anti-Smoking and Canadian Mental Health, as well as being the official photographer for Thunder Bay's Bayview Magazine. Commercial photography is also a passion of Alan’s and he has photographed most of the major industries and local businesses in Northwestern Ontario.

"Photography for Life" is very much their philosophy, whether it be in a pregnancy shot or baby portrait, children or family. Their job is to see the life, the emotion, in each shot and to capture it from behind the lens. They are both artists by nature and this creates a dynamic blend of energy and style, and they are always looking for new experiences and avenues to express their creativity. They like to travel as a family, and one of their favourite parts of the world is the California coast, with places like Big Sur, Monterey and Carmel, and they are always bringing back ideas for photography from places like these.

Spring 2009 saw a huge shift in their focus, as they both attended "Digital Boot Camp" in Bend, Oregon, put on by one of the world's top photographers, Kevin Kubota. With hands-on instruction and personal inspiration, both Alan and Heather discovered new depths of creativity and enthusiasm, as well as sharpening their artistic and stylistic eyes, and this experience has enhanced what they can offer their clients.

As well as working for their clients, ALAN DICKSON Photography is well-known in the community for its generosity and community service. Camp Quality, Wesway, Bachelor of Hope and World Vision are just a few organizations that Alan has consistently donated his time and resources to. Alan and Heather believe in giving back to the community as a part of their lifestyle, and are a faith-based household, running family and business with integrity, honesty and generosity.
