Gordon&Katherine-HighlandFling

"What signifies the life o' man, An' twere na for the lasses O..." Robert Burns
What is it about a good Scottish romance? The tartans, the brooches (called Luckenbooths), the rough country and rolling highland hills? Or could it be the party afterwards? In any case, Gordon and Katherine chose to celebrate their wedding in fine Scottish style, and boy oh boy, does it show. I grew up next to Gordon's grandparents (also named Gordon and Katherine, by the way!!) and I would often find myself regaled with tales of the old country in Kathy's kitchen or front step. (Not to mention, the Beano and Dandy comics that were regularly shipped over from Scotland!) So it is with great fondness that I write this blog, and tip my hat to the bride and groom, who carried this celebration off with spirit and true highland style!

Katherine's family hails from the East Coast, and both friends and family were very much involved in the planning of this wedding. The minister is an old family friend from the Maritimes, married Katherine's parents over 20 years ago, and even baptized her when she was an infant. Gordon's uncle Barry came all the way from Aberdeen to provide the Cameron ribbon tied around the bouquet and the boutonnieres. His aunt Heather (my first and most favourite mentor!) said grace over the meal in a true Scottish blessing. Katherine's aunt arranged the flowers, her parents planned and decorated (with help from Maggie's Magicals, of course!) and her friend Kim played the flute during the ceremony. It was very much about the clans coming together, and some of these images could easily have been taken in Scotland. Take a peak:

Gordon and Katherine met in University through mutual friends, and never has there been a crazier bunch! Alan had so much fun with the wedding party that day, and the Old Fort was the perfect venue, with it's rustic, Scottish Canadian flavour, and while the rain stayed away, it gave the day a very moody Highland air. Scots do love a good party, you know, and once the couple said I do, it was time to get on with the fun!

The entire day was set at the Fort, so things just flowed from one locale to the next, and the reception was no different. MacGillivray's Landing was beautifully appointed, with a touching tribute to families past, adding just the right amount of thoughtfulness into the happy party mix.

Katherine and Gordon, it was a pleasure to be able to chronicle your wedding and tell this particular story for the next and future generations! Gordon Sr, Heather and Ian, I love you all and you will never know how your friendship has affected my life for the better. God Bless you all! Heather and Alan
