Speedskating Event 2011

Today, Friday January 21, Alan was at the Thunder Bay Tournament Center for the Ontario Special Olympics 2011 Speedskating Events. It was cold in the rink, but not as cold as it was outside, and it was sad to hear that some of the outdoor events had to be canceled or postponed because of our bitter weather and frigid temperatures. So, even though his toes were chilly, Alan was glad to be indoors, and the skating kept everybody hot! The Tournament Center was packed out, with many schools bringing classes to cheer on the athletes. The skating was exceptional in all divisions, but what really shone through was the attitude of sportsmanship that prevailed over all. Brian Burke, General Manager of the Toronto Maple Leafs, was on-hand to support the skaters as they sped their way to glory. From excitement to concentration, from victory to consolation, the following shots give you a brief snapshot of the emotion of this event. Here are some of my favourite shots:
Congratulations to all the competitors - you are champions all - and many many thanks to the crowd of well-wishers and supporters. We'll bring you some shots of the figure skating and curling as soon as we can, and as for the outdoor events... We'll just have to hold our collective breaths on that!
