Viva Mexico!

Hola, amigos! I'm back from Mexico and happy to blog a little about the last two weeks and our trip to Cordoba, Veracruz! This wasn't an easy, laid-back beach holiday on the Mayan Riveria - oh no! It was a working holiday in downtown Cordoba (not a beach in sight!) with my eighteen yr old daughter, Brynn, and a team of friends from our church. We were helping with construction projects on a school down there (MITC), as well as working with children in the inner city and a privately run orphanage with about thirty kids of various ages. The days started with breakfast at 6:00, and a healthy serving of black beans and tortillas, and while the staff went above and beyond to make our gastronomic experience a safe one, most of the team were anxious to indulge on authentic Mexican cuisine. (The mangos were to die for, and don't get me started on the pineapple pie! YUM!) The school was constantly filled with music, from tiny ukeleles to electric guitars, from Andean pipes to the African djembe, and sometimes the birds stopped singing just to listen. We also visited La Cumbre, a village high up in the Cordillera Neovolcanica Mountain Range to visit friends and check out some work the teams did last year. Cordoba is a medium-sized city in south central Mexico, and while there were a few days that were scorching hot (caliente), most of the time was just warm and pleasant. And talk about cool - the third largest peak in North America, the volcano Pico de Orizaba, was visible from our compound on those hot sunny days! We were literally living in the shadow of a volcano! My new friend Patti agreed to let me post some of her shots, as Brynn and I were so busy that sometimes we forgot our camera! (Gracias, Patti!) Let me share some of the highlights of our trip with you:

So here's to Mexico, the MITC, the whole team and the wonderful spirit of friendship and cooperation that grew between us all, Canadians, Americans and Mexicans alike! God willing, we will be going back next year as a family, and Alan and Graeme will be bringing their gear to chronicle the adventure. But until then, we have memories and photos, and the still sweet taste of pineapple pie in our hearts... Adios!

Great photos taken by all! Looks like the time spent was worthwhile, helping others with bigger needs than our own. Giving back is such an important thing. It helps us see the benefits of work done. Yes Graeme & I will be going next year to do some video & still shooting. We want to put together a promotional piece to promote their Mission, maybe get my good friend Paul from Riptide AM ( a Toronto firm) to come and join us.
